April 2013

Members, don’t forget - Nominations for the FATE Awards must be postmarked by August 15, 2013.

January 2013

FATE lost a cherished and respected Executive Board member on the evening of Thursday, January 3rd. The passing of Bob Ankrom, a beloved and honored theatre educator who chaired the University of Miami's Theatre Department for several years, is a former FATE treasurer (who could fondly be seen at the registration desk of MANY conferences) and more recently, served as Executive Director of the Florida Theatre Conference. He will be sorely missed.

July 2012

All of the new performing arts courses that have been pending were approved July 17th.  If you need copies to show your administrators in planning next semester CLICK HERE to download them.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Rick DeSpain, Chrisitta Whittaker, Lori Sessions, Janet Shelley,  Ted Lewis, Randall Adkison, Jenny Sejanski and Lisa Vorreiter -- who are also working on EOC questions to benefit all of us.

June 2012

Congratulations to members Reid Conrad, Pam Janecki and Teryle Traver, named by FAAE as Teacher/Artists Residencies at the Hermitage Artists Reatreat. The four week residency is awarded to five Florida educators each year.

Congratulations to Michael Vasallo, named Secondary School Educator of the year by the Pinellas County Music Educators.

May 2012

Pinellas County schools held their annual showcase of winners in a county-wide competition in the arts. $66,000 in scholarships in 6 categories, including $11,000 in theatre for four students. This is how you keep the arts alive. Find a generous donor (Dr. Walker in Pinellas), and build from there with corporate sponsors. Are any other school districts doing something like this? If so, share your ideas and information with us.

April 2012

Congratulations to FATE's 2011 Administrator of the Year Michael Vasallo on his appointment as Magnet Coordinator for Pinellas County Center for the Arts (PCCA) at Gibbs High, his alma mater.

March 2012

Congratulations and thank you to Daron Hawkins and Lindsay Painter and their students for the outstanding Thespian conference that closed last night. You brought us an exciting, event-packed four days that inspired thousands of high school students. They will never forget it.

Good luck to everyone going to Tampa tomorrow for an exciting festival of competitions and mainstage productions for 7,000 students -- especially to the 141 FATE members who are bringing Troupes to Tampa. Have a blast -- you can sleep on the bus going home.

Congratulations to FATE member Bob Ankrom who was honored Saturday with the Southeast Theatre Conference's Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob is Executive Director of the Florida Theatre Conference.

February 2012

Congratulations to everyone who organized and ran the Junior Thespian Festival, especially Rod Savickis and the crew from Melbourne HS. Great to see terrific talent being developed so early by outstanding educators. There were no "losers" at this conference.

November 2011

Another outstanding theatre magnet program is wiped out: Hernando county has eliminated the excellent magnet program taught by Lori and Tim Erickson. This shortsighted decision leaves aspiring theatre students in the county with no place to be trained. Why do parents allow things like this to happen in our state?

October 2011

Thespians the Movie is going to be on Showtime in several showings. Exciting documentary about Florida's talented young students and their dedicated teachers -- current and past FATE members. If you love theatre, or teens (or both) be sure to watch it. Or if you were ever in a high school play.

Students in arts programs are 3xs more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
Students in the arts in all disciplines outperformed their non-art peers on the SAT by 91 points in 2009

Employment in arts-related jobs (scenic designers, forensic artists, art therapists, animators, etc) are set to rise 16% through 2016, which is faster than the national average in most fields.
Nationally, the nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $166.2 billion in economic activity every year. Thank you Stefanie Lehmann via Karen Bail for the above info!!!!

Congratulations to 3 outstanding theatre educators honored by FATE this weekend: Linda Lovins - Florida's Arts Advocate of the year; Michael Vasallo of St. Pete's John Hopkins = Arts Administrator of the year; and Taylor Horne (Jacksonville Episcopal) = Florida's Theatre Educator of the year. We are proud to have you represent the profession.

September 2011

One week from now Florida theatre teachers will be filling workshops at the 32nd FATE conference at the St. Pete Hilton, learning and growing. It's not too late to register.

July 2011

RIP Lee Tempest, Thespian State Director, FATE Board member and champion of theatre students throughout the state. His leadership, warmth and friendship will be missed by everyone who knew him.

April 2011

Thanks to the 16 people who turned out today in Jacksonville for an excellent "mini conference" and to presenters Bob White, Cameron Jackson, Michele Diamonte, and Creatively Independent. Congratulations to Taylor Horne and her committee for putting together a really helpful afternoon.

Sorry to hear that St. Pete High is dropping IB Theatre -- one of the first 100 in the world as part of the original pilot, one of the first three in Florida. An excellent program that has saved parents a lot of college tuition money and given hundreds of students a strong foundation in theatre. Why? Who's next?

March 2011

FATE Member Debra Barnum is on a roll: Lifetime Career Award last Saturday from Florida State Thespians; word today that she will be inducted into the national Educational Theatre Association's Hall of Fame this fall in Chicago. Congratulations!

Two "teachers only" workshops at State Thespians Friday in Convention Center 5, 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Also, stop at the FATE table Wed in registration room, then at the Convention Center exhibit area.

January 2011

Happy New Year!! Looking forward to a year of big challenges and (we hope) bigger opportunities. Wishing everyone good luck and good theatre in 2011.
